Folks, please communicate with me any special requests that you may have concerning the rooms. Direct calls to the hotel have caused confusion because I am the only one who knows that you are booked. Calling the hotel only causes double bookings. I have been assigning rooms as the information sheets are returned to me. This is why we were able to get the price that we did - the hotel doesn't have to worry about room allocations. If you require a ground floor room, or any special request, just let me know and I will do my best.

Good day! The information forms have been coming in and a reminder went out to the slow ones to at least get in the information only so that planning can be done. Here are the numbers: with 12 couples yet to respond, 44 people are going on the Safari tour, 34 people are going to Buck Island, 38 people are going on the Sunset Cruise and 21 people are going horseback riding. The week’s schedule of events will leave Friday and Saturday completely for leisure time.
If you have had a problem opening the link to the pictures that I posted here last week, try copy and paste the whole link (all three lines at once) to the address bar. That should work.

The latest update 7/21/07
Many thanks to the people who have returned their information forms. It makes this a lot easier to have plenty of time to plan. Remember, the last person to reply will get the last room in the hotel – whatever it is (and it will not be the penthouse) Other notes:
Among the things that you may want to bring are disposable underwater cameras. If you have a mask and snorkel tube there is good underwater viewing everywhere. The hotel has some equipment to use and they are rentable from dive shops. Also, pack toiletries in plastic bags in your suitcase. Lotions tend to burst due to pressure changes.
In case you didn’t know, you can print out portions of the blog. Just highlight the portion, copy it, paste it to word or notebook and print.
Comments keep the blog alive. You can view them or add your own by clicking on “comments”.
Here is another sight to visit. www.stcroixthisweek.com. This is the website of a free magazine that you can pick up everywhere on the island. It has a lot of touristy information. The one that you will see on line is the current issue. As we get closer, more events will pertain.
Cell phones – as far as Julie knows all cell phones are operable in most places on the island. Remember, I said most.
Carl Goretski has thrown out the challenge for golfers. Now, Carl has never played in an Eastwind golf tournament so we have no way of knowing his capabilities or limitations. Further, we don’t know if he is good at playing from sand traps or if he is a good sand bagger. Speaking of Carl, he and Fran will be hosting a Sangria Fiesta on Wednesday evening. This will be from 5:00 to 7:00 and will also feature Steve Katz, a great guitarist and a friend of many years.
People interested in fishing should let me know. Captain Carl tells me that the anglers can bring back most of the catch and Julie says that the hotel kitchen will cook it up for you for dinner. The cost of the boat is $600.00 for a 4 to 6 hour trip for up to 6 people. So, a party of 5 would come to 120.00 per person, 6 would be 100.00 per.
The next update will address island critters, among other things.

So, now that the blog is all set up I guess I can start adding pictures. The beach scene is really the beach at the hotel. I’m hoping that everyone will check the blog at least weekly to read the latest. So, let’s get to it:
FISHING: There has been enough interest in fishing to call on a friend and have him hold a few days. His website is www.fishwithcarl.com and he promises to do his best to find the big ones. A half day trip (4 – 6 hours) runs $600.00 for up to 6 people.
GOLF: This was mentioned in an earlier update. One couple has shown a desire. Let me know if others want to play and we can work on foursomes.
CHARGING AT THE HOTEL: Julie has stated that guests may charge their meals at the hotel restaurant and their drinks at the bar to their room. This will ease the burden of keeping cash and/or wallets and purses on your person while on the beach and by the pool. The charge slips will be a two part ticket (one for the hotel and one for your file in the office) There will also be the tear off stub for your records to reconcile your account.
THINGS TO BRING: Be sure to bring all necessities (especially toiletries) since these items at the hotel gift shop are VERY expensive. Disposable underwater cameras are a popular item, esprcially if you are goiug out to Buck Island. There are pharmacies where these can also be purchased, but it will be easier to bring them.
FLIGHT INFORMATION: Julie would like all the arrival dates and times by August 20. This will ease her job and that of the staff.
RESTAURANTS: There have been some inquiries as to the best restaurant. Let me say this, “If I were going to eat out only once and not want to spend a fortune, I would dine at Kendricks”. David Kendrick’s website is www.gotostcroix.com/kendricks/index.htm and I know that when you make reservations and tell him that you are with Louie’s group, he will be sure that your evening will be memorable.
VIRGIN ISLAND PEOPLE: People who inhabit St. Croix are varied. Native Cruzans are a portion of the “locals”. There are also people from most other Caribbean islands including Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo and even Cuba, not to mention the United States and countries of Europe. Most locals are very polite and would like to be treated the same. When you meet locals, it is customary to greet them with a “good morning” or “good afternoon” before engaging in conversation.
TIPPING: As in every tourist environment, people in the trade survive on gratuities. Here are some guidelines:
Housekeeping – an average of $5.00 per day per room is standard. Level of service will determine + or -. This can be left daily or done at the end of the stay.
Bar & restaurant – the normal 15-20% is customary.
Side trips – Buck Island, sunset cruise, island tour, horseback rides and fishing are also occasions for tipping.
RENTAL CARS: Some people are opting not to use a rental car. They may want to rethink this. The reason for this is that the hotel is remote and taxis are costly enough that by the end of the week you will have spent as much or more on cabs than on a rental car. All of the side trips (with the exception of Sweeney’s tour, who will pick up at the hotel) require getting to down town Christiansted for the event. This includes Big Beard’s Buck Island and Sunset tours. Fishing trips, horseback rides and golf are even farther.
You could consider sharing a rental with another couple. Having a car will give you the ability to tour on your own once you get to know the lay of the land. The 10% discount was negotiated for our benefit but only applies to pre-bookings. As anywhere, less than a week rentals are much higher on a per day basis.

EASTWIND FRIENDS
Well, here we go into another phase of high tech. Hopefully this will save a ton of time emailing to the 38 of 40 (yes, we have 2 ludites) couples who are going to St. Croix in November. If I can figure this out I will post all of the updates to date and even try a few pictures. If you are on this then it all worked and you received an email from me telling you to check this blog weekly for updates since I will not be laborously sending out email updates. Only the snail mail to the 2 ludites.
So, here goes, starting with the original blurb that was in the October newsletter of the Eastwind Association:
Chances are you won’t see any ice being broken in Christiansted Harbor (except by bartenders). But, as a special offer to our shipmates for a fun thing to do at a desirous location and at a very special price, this one week trip to St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands is packed with things to satisfy every whim. Please note that this is not a reunion, although like a reunion, it is not for profit. It is an opportunity to have fun with shipmates and friends.
The Palms at Pelican Cove is conveniently located close to Christiansted and is right on the beach. Every room faces the sand, palms and warm Caribbean Sea. Having lived on St. Croix for 14 years (1986-2000), Vicky and I can highly recommend this as a fun get together for our shipmates. Between the hotel staff, island friends and us, you will be assured of a good time.
The Palms has arranged a special price of $549.00 per room week. This includes the room tax and surcharge. Now, you may say, “Sure, the room rate is low, but the airfare will kill us”. Well, we have thought of that too! Special arrangements have been made through American Airlines for a fare of $550.00 per person, round trip from anywhere in the continental US.
The trip is set for November 4 – 11, 2007. That is a Sunday to Sunday. Earlier arrivals and later departures will be based at the same prices.
Here is a list of some things to do on St. Croix:
Sport fishing in surrounding waters
Snorkel at any number of beaches
Boat trip and snorkel at Buck Island
Horseback riding among ruins
Scuba dive trips
Visit Botanical Gardens
Visit Whim Great House museum
Island motor tour
Fast boat to St. Thomas for a day
Tour the Cruzan Rum distillery
Parasailing or wind surfing
The Palms will be hosting a complimentary rum punch welcome party on Monday evening complete with steel drum music. The rest of the week is up to you. Some of the things to do are best done as groups, so sign ups will be offered. Saturday evening will feature a farewell West Indian Buffet in the dining room, followed by a show consisting of a Macko Jumbi dancer, fire dancer, limbo dancer, broken bottle dancer and steel band. After the show the band will play for dancing and the bar will be making Pina Coladas until the last shipmate blows taps.
This offer is being made now since the hotel has only forty rooms and we selected a week that has no prior reservations (so we can own the hotel) and the week is just “off season”. “Season” is from mid December to mid April when rates are high. So, it is first come, first serve. After that, a standby list will exist. And, yes, you can bring family and/or friends. It is understandable that the only way for some people to attend would be if they could have another couple with them to share the experience.
Numerous websites can be found on St. Croix by Googling “St. Croix”. The website for the Palms at Pelican Cove is http://www.palmspelicancove.com/.
Rental cars are available from a number of sources. We can recommend a local that is economical and will deliver to the hotel. Jeeps are popular and hold 4 people. Minivans hold up to 7 people so that is the most economical per person. Just remember to drive on the left, and have insurance coverage.
The restaurant at the hotel is excellent and serves all three meals every day. The guest rooms are large and airy, and have either a king or two queen beds, TV, air conditioner, coffee maker, refrigerator and ceiling fan. November is a very comfortable time in the islands, so you may wish to not use the air conditioner and opt for the balmy Caribbean breezes.
For the sportsmen in the group, there are 3 golf courses, 2 of which are championship. Fishing is abundant. Tennis courts are at the hotel. There are kayak rental tours of mangroves. There is a casino toward the east end and numerous dive shops.
Interested? Email me at louie-vicky@msn.com or phone 623 434 6805 and you will be put on the list with a priority number. Then we will send out packets and start the process of details and payments.
So, you may ask how this can be put together for this price, especially since the room rate in season is 210.00 per night? Well, as I said, Vicky and I lived on St. Croix for 14 years. We know all of the people that we would recommend to you, from the fishing boat captain to the golf pros to the rum distillery manager to the island motor tour operator to the steel drum musicians. Even the manager of the Palms at Pelican Cove is a long time friend, past coworker and even a past tenant.
So, pack your shorts, t-shirts, sunglasses, sandals, cameras, sun screen and swim suits. We be gwine to de islands, mon!
Louie LaRiccia
Well, it looks like that one copied OK, so lets try the March 07 update!
To: St. Croix listees
From: Louie LaRiccia
OK, folks, as promised, here is more information and the time for placing a deposit. This message will be 4 pages long so you should print it out and save it for later reference. Please note that many of the prices quoted for activities are current prices and there may be an increase by November, small though it may be. On the other hand, through negotiations we may be able to lower some prices a bit because of group discounts.
1. First is the deposit. You are in the first 40 people to show interest. If you are still planning on going, please send me a check for $250.00 to secure your room. This will still be refundable until we determine that it won’t, like maybe around August 1. Make the check out to me and put St. Croix in the memo line. If you have changed your mind and do not plan on going, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can give your room to someone else. The breakdown of the $550.00 per room week is as follows:
399.00 – hotel
73.00 – Virgin Islands room tax
78.00 – to cover nibbles, live music and rum punch for the
Monday welcome party, the band and entertainment
on Saturday. Any leftover funds will be used to defray
the cost of the West Indian buffet.
2. There will be plenty of things to do during the week. All of the activities listed here are linked from the website, www.gotostcroix.com. Or you can use the direct link listed.
Some we will try to set up as groups to get a better price and to assure space. I will describe them here and we will set up the groups later. The first is the motorized island tour, Safari Tours with my friend Sweeny Toussaint. We will have to do more than one day with him as his bus only holds 25 at a time. The tour lasts about 6 ½ hours and takes you all over the island. The cost is $45.00 per person. This would be the #1 attraction to do. Website is www.gotostcroix.com/safaritours/
3. The #2 attraction would be the trip to Buck Island with Big Beard,
John Macy. The 40 foot catamaran holds 37 people. The half day trip is $60.00 per person. The snorkeling and the beach are spectacular at Buck Island. We would also set up a sunset cruise on the same boat at $35.00 per person. While you are on gotostcroix.com, click on the live web cam (upper right corner of the home page). There are two live pictures, one in Frederiksted and one in Christiansted. The Christiansted picture shows the harbor and you can usually see John’s boats at anchor, the Flyer and the Renegade.
Web site is http://www.bigbeards.com/index.htm
4. If anyone plans to go to St. Thomas for a day, the most convenient
mode is Seaborne Airlines. The roundtrip cost is about $130.00 per person. These are seaplanes that fly from downtown to downtown, which eliminates driving to the airport on St. Croix and having to deal with taxis from the airport on St. Thomas. Web site: http://www.seaborneairlines.com.
5. Horseback riding, anyone? Jill’s Equestrian Stables in Frederiksted offers a two hour ride through the rainforest and along the beach. The cost is $75.00 per person. www.paulandjills.com is their website.
6. My friends, Michelle and Sam at Dive Experience, a 5 star PADI
Dive shop, can do a one tank introductory dive for $80.00 or a two tank for $105.00. The duration varies up to 4 hours and goes to a depth of 35 feet. If you want to spend the three days, they can also certify you. There are also many places around the island that will
rent snorkel equipment. Dive Experience is at www.divexp.com
7. St. Croix offers two championship golf courses:
The Buccaneer has a very scenic par 70 course. Green fees are $40.00
Cart is 20.00 PP and rental clubs are 25.00 www.thebuccaneer.com/golf
Carambola has a challenging par 72 course with green fees of $65.00.
Cart is 25.00 PP and rental clubs are 30.00. www.golfcarambola.com
8. In the event that any or all of these do not appeal to you or fit in your
budget, the beach, tennis courts and pool at the hotel are a desirable alternative.
10. As was mentioned before, there will be two group events at the hotel:
Monday evening will be a complimentary welcome rum punch party with hors d’ouvres and steel pan.
Saturday will be a West Indian buffet with steel band music and
entertainment. Cost of this meal to be determined.
Other notes:
VERY IMPORTANT: YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO
VISIT THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS. YOU NEED ONLY HAVE A
GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID, SUCH AS A DRIVER’S
LICENSE.
You should probably start making your airline reservations soon. The
price quoted of $550.00 through American Airlines is still valid. You
should, however, check on your own to see if you can get a better
deal or if you want to use frequent flyer miles for this. People on the east coast will probably get a better deal but those of us out west will assuredly opt for the $550.00 deal. You can make the $550.00 deal by contacting Julie Printy at the hotel. Just tell her that you are with Louie’s group. The phone number is 800-548-4460.
Remember, you must make your own flight arrangements. And, don’t wait until the last minute or you will be on a redeye laying over in Nairobi. Even though the flyer that you received stated the dates of November 3 – 10, the actual dates are November 4 – 11. You can come early and/or stay later. Just let me know and I will cook you a comparable deal with Julie.
There is cel phone coverage on St. Croix. I use Cingular with pretty good coverage. There are other carriers on the island. I will be asking for cel phone numbers if you plan to bring one so that we can find each other in case we get lost.
St. Croix is on Atlantic Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of Eastern. Daylight Savings ends on November 4 this year, the day we all arrive. (Although you can come earlier) Now, St. Croix does not observe Daylight Savings so during DST their time is the same as EDT. During standard time they are one hour ahead of Eastern. Confused?
Car rentals can be arranged at a later time. The rates are comparable to stateside. We have arranged with Olympic Car Rentals the best deal for everyone. Julie has negotiated a discount for us that will save us some money. The cars will be delivered to the hotel for those that want them. Carpooling is encouraged to save money and parking spaces. You can see their website and rates at www.stcroixcarrentals.com. If you desire a car, when you make your travel arrangements with Julie you can tell her that you want a car. If you are making your own travel arrangements, you should still contact Julie for the car.
In a subsequent notice I will list many restaurants that I feel are worthy and where I know the establishment. Of course, the restaurant at the hotel is one of the best on the island.
If you desire, during your stay you should pick up some duty free liquor to bring home. You are allowed to bring home 6 bottles per person as long as 1 is bottled in the Virgin Islands. That would be Cruzan Rum or Southern Comfort. The Cruzan Rum sells for about $3.50 for a liter. This is comparable to about 13.00 in the states. The liquor must be checked baggage due to the new regulations.
While on the subject of shopping, there is a lot of duty free shopping to be had, mostly in Christiansted. One of the most popular items that people buy is a Cruzan “Hook” bracelet from Sonya, Ltd. in downtown Christiansted. Website is www.sonyaltd.com. Before our week is up many of our people will be sporting these.
If you have any other questions or concerns please email me at louie-vicky@msn.com or call 623 434 6805. You can send the deposit checks to me at:

Now we'll do the July 1 update:
Page 1
As we are four months away from St. Croix, some more informative tidbits will be helpful.
First, and foremost, if you have not made your flight reservations as yet, now is the time. If you live on the east coast you may get a better price by booking yourself. American Airlines is the most popular carrier to the Caribbean, so check them first. If you cannot beat the $550.00 per person, round trip, then call Julie at the hotel to purchase the vouchers. The 550.00 price is a super deal for the people on the west coast.
Next is the matter of passports. There has been a ton of confusion on the matter. At least until the end of the year, you DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO TRAVEL TO OR FROM THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS. All that is necessary is a government issued photo ID (a driver’s license will work fine).
On a separate attachment will be a list of all who are coming. You may want to use this for carpooling purposes for rental cars. We will go in to the rates later. I will also be asking for your arrival flights and times as I will be picking you up at the airport and bringing you to the hotel. The rental cars will be brought to the hotel. The reason for picking you up is that most will be arriving on a late American Eagle flight from San Juan. I would be more comfortable picking you up rather than having you driving a strange car on a strange island, in the dark, when you are tired from travel, going to a hotel that you don’t know the location of and driving on the LEFT SIDE of the road.
Now, the question that all have been awaiting – HOW MUCH LIQUOR CAN I BRING BACK WITH ME? You can bring back up to 5 liters per person and 1 of liquor bottled in the US Virgin Islands. This would be Cruzan Rum or Southern Comfort. That is a total of six liters per person. The best prices are not at touristy liquor stores. The best prices are where the locals buy – K-Mart, Cost-U-Less or Plaza Extra Super Market.
Now is also the time to send me more money. If you have already sent the $250.00 deposit you can remit at least 150.00 and I will bill you in a couple of months for the balance. You can also send the money now or in a couple of months for the group events that you wish to go on.
What clothes should you bring? First and foremost, think light. Shorts, casual tops, sandals, bathing attire, THAT’S IT! No suits, no dresses. In the 14 years that we lived on St. Croix I never owned a suit and had only 3 pair of trousers that I hardly ever wore. Sunscreen will be a must for times on the beach or at the pool. A little prevention is better than spending days in your room suffering.
Page 2
Everyone has probably had the opportunity to check out www.gotostcroix.com on the internet and checked out some of the things to do. Now, there will be some things that we will be doing as a group to get a little kick back from the concessionaire which will go toward defraying the cost of the Saturday night West Indian Buffet gala extravaganza. With any luck we should come out with this being a “no cost” dinner. The group attractions are:
Island Safari Tour
Big Beard’s Buck Island ½ day boat trip
Big Beard’s sunset cruise with rum punch
Horseback ride through the rain forest
Let me know which of these you are interested in doing so that I can make arrangements. If you want to do any of the these with anyone else in particular just let me know. Once we get to the hotel I will give you cards for each event to get you aboard. That’s about the simplest way. Page 3 of this will have more information on these things to do.
I will also need you to email me your names as appears on your IDs and your cell phone numbers, if you have them.
I will need your arrival and departure dates and times with flight numbers. This is important for the hotel, especially if you plan to arrive days earlier or stay days later. If you are wondering about this, the room rate will be the same per day, $67.50 per day includes tax.
Now, the matter of rental cars. I recommend Centerline Car Rentals. Manuel Guttierez is a friend and has offered a 10% discount to us. You can visit the website, www.centerlinecarrentals.com for all the information, or call 888-288-8755. You can even pre book the car on line or by phone. BE SURE THAT YOU MENTION “EASTWIND GROUP” TO GET THE DISCOUNT. Be sure that your auto insurance covers you so that you do not have to buy the insurance when you rent the car. You should be very careful when driving for stray animals sometimes tend to be on the roads. These would include cows, goats and even horses. And, you can start now practicing to drive on the left side of the road.
Here are the base prices for different size vehicles for a one week rental:
Subcompact 210.00
Compact 239.00
Midsize 270.00
Full size 295.00
4 Pass. Jeep 295.00
5 Pass. Jeep 360.00
7 Pass Minivan 395.00
A WORD OF TO THE WISE. Crime occurs on St. Croix as much as anywhere else. When driving or even walking, be aware of your surroundings. Tourists tend to let their guard down. Don’t wear lots of jewelry in public. Just as at home, there are places that you do not frequent, there are those in the islands. Just be alert when out and about. If you get lost call me – 623 308 0093.
Page 3
THINGS TO DO AS GROUPS
The first thing to do is Sweeny’s St. Croix Safari Tour. His website is http://www.gotostcroix.com/safaritours/. Sweeney Toussaint is a long time friend and will give you a very informative tour of St. Croix. He is the most respected tour operator on the island. The cost will be $45.00 per person. I have booked him for three days since his open bus holds 26 people maximum. The tour will start at our hotel at 9:30 AM and return at 3:00 PM. Lunch will be on your own in Frederiksted. If you only do one thing, this should be it.
Next is Big Beard’s Buck Island ½ day trip. I have known John Macey since 1987 and consider him to be very reputable. I have reserved his 37 passenger catamaran “Renegade” for 2 days. The website is http://www.bigbeards.com/index.htm. The cost will be $60.00 per person and will be an afternoon trip. BRING SUNSCREEN. The boat leaves Christiansted at noon and returns at 4:30 PM
Also, Big Beard’s Sunset Cruise is on a similar boat that holds 40 people and departs at 4:30 for 2 hours. The $35.00 fare includes both punch and rum punch. The sunsets are beautiful in the islands.
Horseback riding is available with Paul & Jill’s Equestrian Stables in Frederiksted. Website is http://pws.prserv.net/paul-and-jills/. The 2 hour ride includes seashore and rain forest in groups of no more than 10 at a time. The cost is $75.00 per person.

OK, so that's it, up to date. Over this weekend (July 14) I will post more information, since there have been inquiries and requests. Deep sea fishing seems to be on a lot of minds, so we will cover that, plus I think we can squeeze in another party.
3039 W. McRae Way
Phoenix, AZ 85027
